Stuttgart Haus der Geschichte on Saturday, February 17

Dear Members and Guests,

Please join us at the Stuttgart Haus der Geschichte (House of History) on Saturday, February 17, 2024, for a fascinating guided tour through the very special exhibit

American Dreams,

German Emigration to America.

Picture: Haus der Geschichte, by permission

What is the American Dream? Freedom, escape from poverty, opportunity, toleration, or religious fulfilment? From legendary Baden revolutionaries to amateur race car drivers, from poor farmers to religious refugees, many dreamed and dream of the “American Dream”. This special exhibition shows the surprising and moving, triumphant and tragic stories of Germans from this area who left their homeland for the “New World” – to seek success or to escape the confines of their everyday life. Around 200 historic objects tell the story of over 300 years of emigration – success, gold rush, wealth, national pride and religious fulfilment. The exhibition also, however, deals with disillusion, drudgery, alcoholism, poverty, frustration, and death. Together we will explore how Germans from the Stuttgart area found their fates in America.
