Staatsgalerie Stuttgart on Saturday, January 27

Dear Members and Guests,

Please join us at the Staatsgalerie on Saturday, 27 January for a fascinating guided tour of:

Modigliani. Modern Views

The exhibition looks at the work of Amedeo Modigliani from a European perspective. The exhibition embeds him in his cosmopolitan Parisian environment and at the same time shows for the first time, concrete comparisons with artists from German-speaking countries, most of whom he did not know personally.

Nevertheless, exciting parallels can be discovered between Modigliani and Paula Modersohn-Becker, Jeanne Mammen, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Wilhelm Lehmbruck, which are evidence of the close exchange between the European avant-gardes at that time. Their intensive preoccupation with portraits and nudes accompanies and shapes the develop-ment of the human image of a young generation of artists.

The exhibition also reassesses Modigliani’s image of women and shows the painter as a chronicler of a strengthening female self-confidence in the years before and during the First World War.

The starting point for the exhibition, which was created in cooperation with the Museum Barberini Potsdam, are the artist’s two paintings in the collection of the Staatsgalerie, which is one of only four museums in Germany to own works by the Italian. The exhibition is the first Modigliani show in Germany since 2009 and brings together more than 80 works from international museums and private collections. Directions to the Staatsgalerie, Konrad-Adenauer-Straße 30-32, 70173 Stuttgart

By car: Multi-story car parks: Staatsgalerie, Haus der Geschichte, Landtag, Schlossgarten, or Landesbibliothek. For more information on parking, go to www.pbw.de. In view of the high density of traffic, the large Stuttgart 21 construction site, and the limited available parking, we recommend coming by public transport.

By public transport, our recommendation is to take the Stadtbahn to “Charlottenplatz” and walk over to the museum (about an 8 minutes’ walk).

Stadtbahn #: U2, U4, U5, U6, U7, U12, U14, U15. Please use the „Schlossgarten” exit and follow the footpath past the Landtag to the pedestrian underpass by the Opernhaus. Once on the other side of the road, turn right and continue walking towards the Staatsgalerie. After about 100 meters you will reach the path up to the museum entrance (Stirling building).
