GAC 1948 Ceramic Painting Tools and Techniques

To see the various pieces available to paint, go to Rohkeramik – Lamooi

Advice, bring a drawing or picture of the design you want to paint.

*Tools to use (all tools will be provided by Lamooi – no additional charge)

  • Stencil(s) for even, repetitive designs
  • A pen or pencil to draw an outline
  • A toothpick to scratch a design into a layer of paint (sgraffito)
  • A brush to make splashes, speckles, dots, points and dabs
  • A sponge for broad coverage or interesting texture

Techniques

Freihändig malen / Freehand painting
Freehand means what it sounds like – a chance to let one’s imagination and creativity run free! A chance to use colors and shapes with wild abandon! But be sure to let each layer dry before applying the next.

Vorzeichnen mit Stift / Sketching with a Pencil
Designs can be drawn onto the pottery piece as a guide for filling in color. The lines disappear after firing – but be careful not to press too hard.

Schablonen / Stencils
Stencils allow you to decorate your piece with intricate designs. Pay attention to the color contrast – the stencilled color should be darker than the background color.

Sprenkeln / Splattering
You can dip a toothbrush into your favorite color and run your thumb over the bristles. This will give you the typical, random ‚dots‘ on your ceramics.
Or you can dip a paintbrush in your favorite color then flick your wrist to create splash designs on your piece. But beware, this can get messy! Thankfully the paints wash out of clothing.

Punkte und Tupfen / Dots and Spots
You can easily create dots and spots on your ceramics. To do this, dip your paintbrush handle or a toothpick into the paint and dab the paint onto the surface. You can also create great patterns with small sponges.

Information taken from various sources on the internet.

„Katharina Grosse – The Sprayed Dear“

Dear Members and Guests,

We invite you join us on Saturday, October 11, 2025 to enjoy a special and exclusive guided tour of the Central Fire Station in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt.

Photo: Alex Duarte by permission

The Fire Station in Bad Cannstadt started out as a Volunteer Fire Department. Around 1906 it was converted into a Professional Fire Department and has been in operation since then as one of five in the urban area of Stuttgart. In 2002 the Fire Station became the Central Fire Station of Stuttgart; and in April 2006, it became the control center (Leitstelle) for the entire city of Stuttgart.

We will meet at 14:30 at the Fire Station at the gate to the yard (to enter from Daimler Strasse). The guided tours (1x English / 1x German) will start at 15:00 and will last about two hours. The tours include general information about the fire station’s history and the emergency spectrum, the fire department fleet for various operations and the control center to handle all incoming emergency calls.

At approx. 17:00h we will walk as a group to the restaurant “The Little Greek Taverna” in Bad Cannstatt, offering traditional Greek cuisine in a cozy atmosphere. You will make your menu choice à la carte. Please let us know with your reservation if you will be joining us for dinner.

Cost: 0 € for members; 5 € for non-members – will be collected on the day of the event.
The number of participants is limited, first come, first served – members have priority.

Note: Firemen seem to have a great desire for snacks, cakes and sweets. So, feel free to bring whatever you want to donate instead of a gratuity – all goodies will be appreciated.

As different as the castles appear, so different are their stories. We will learn more about their eventful histories as well as about the unique and mysterious story about the “Schleglerbund” – a union of knights formed at the end of the 15th century rebelling against the looming decline of the knighthood.

German Peasants’ War museum on Saturday, June 21, 2025

Dear Members and Guests,

Please join us as we visit the German Peasants’ War museum in Böblingen, on Saturday, 21 June, 2025. The Museum in the Zehntscheuer (Tithe Tax Granary) near the Marktplatz in Böblingen portrays the events surrounding the Peasants’ uprising which swept over southern Germany in 1525. The peasants and their leaders, taking over ideas springing from Martin Luther’s Reformation movement, which began only 8 years earlier, demanded freedom from their serfdom and the onerous taxes and duties they owed to their lords and the church. These ideas are expressed in the famous “12 Articles”, which can be seen as a kernel of democratic thought at the beginning of the modern era. The final battle of this war was fought near Böblingen in May 2025. Though the uprising was bloodily put down by the vested powers, the ideas then expressed have lived on. (bauernkriegsmuseum.boeblingen.de).

Altburg, North Black Forest on Saturday, May 17, 2025

Dear Members and Guests,

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, we invite you to come with us to the Northern Black Forest above Calw. We’ll visit the small town of Altburg that has a few hidden gems to offer, all within easy walking distance, which makes for an interesting and fun afternoon.

Church and Farmhouse Museum
Source both photos: Christel Baumann (with permission)

The historic Martinskirche (St. Martin’s Church) was officially documented first in 1342; however the Church Tower dates back to around 1200, the nave and choir to 1250-1300. The church was started in late Romanesque style and was later converted to late Gothic style. The historically most valuable artistic items are murals that were restored in the last century, they had been hidden or painted over for centuries.

The rectory dates back to 1784 and was built in baroque style; it was renovated in recent years and belongs to the official cultural heritage of Wuerttemberg. It is a big house with many rooms, as a rectory not only was the home of the pastor’s (usually big) family but also held offices and assembly rooms for the congregation. We are invited by the current pastor to visit the ground floor.

The Bauernhausmuseum (Farmhouse Museum) was built in 1813 and was inhabited by a farmer and his family until 1967. Eventually, in 1989, after extensive renovation, it was opened as the current farmhouse museum. It is a wonderfully authentic example of a stately farmhouse of the 1800s/1900s with features/furnishings of the time. We’ll even be served freshly baked waffles from an 1800s wood-fired stove on a built-in waffle iron.

Adjacent to the Farmhouse Museum, in the old hen house, a fully functional old smithy has been relocated and will be fired up for us. An apprentice of the last owner of the smithy will demonstrate his craftsmanship to us.

Timetable:
13:45 – 14:00 Meet at the Parkplatz behind the Rathaus (town hall) on Speßhardter Straße 1
14:00 – 14:30 Pfarrhaus/Rectory – guided tour of the ground floor
14:30 – 15:15 Church – guided tour
15:15 – 16:15 Bauernhausmuseum (Farmhouse Museum) – guided tour – fresh waffles coffee/tea
16:15 – 17:15 Smithy
17:30         Dinner at Gasthaus Hirsch (Italian food)

Guided walk through old Esslingen on Saturday, April 12, 2025

Dear Members and Guests,

On Saturday, April 12, we offer a guided walk through old Esslingen focusing on the 13th Century, when Esslingen was a booming town which simultaneously built 4 large churches, the town wall, the Neckar bridges and many beautiful half-timbered houses, including the oldest half-timbered houses in Germany. We will take a leisurely stroll through Esslingen and learn about all these landmarks. A real highlight is the „Altes Rathaus“, a beautiful half-timbered building with a Renaissance facade containing a fabulous astronomical clock.

Meeting time 14:45 pm on the marketplace next to the tourist info center, on the north side of the Stadtkirche (church with two towers).
The tour will be in English and last about two hours. The tour will end around 17:00 pm at the front of the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus).
From there we will walk to the Restaurant Palmscher Bau, Innere Bruecke 2, Esslingen (Tel: 0711-350 245) where we will enjoy a pleasant dinner together.
Come and join us!

The walking will mostly be level, with some small up and down, and some cobblestone. We will be underway for about two hours. Some conditioning necessary. Wear comfortable walking shoes. This tour will be held, rain or shine. Dress accordingly.

This is a great opportunity for those new to the area, those who do not know Esslingen, and those who love to hear Scott’s voice ! :o)

Cost: The guided tour through Esslingen is free. We will dine in the Palmscher Bau. There is ample space available. Dinner will be a la carte (individual payment). They offer Swabian, German and international cuisine, including vegetarian/vegan. To see the menu go to www.palmscher-bau.de/speisen-getraenke. While enjoying dinner we will also have time to engage in pleasant conversation while reflecting on the beautiful historic setting we have just experienced.

Please state with your reservation if you are joining us for dinner.
