Approximately 55 paintings and works on paper from the museum’s own collection, alongside prestigious international loans, will illuminate Carpaccio’s unique role as a chronicler of Venetian life.

Welcome to the Stuttgart Ghost Tour on Saturday, 19 October
Since it is almost Halloween, we’ve decided to take part in this really interesting historical walk through Stuttgart’s macabre past! The Ghost Tour will lead us to the Old Castle, the Market Hall and the Collegiate Church and tell us about eerie encounters with spooky monks, a headless horseman and two shadowy figures that can still be seen at dawn!
Photo: Ghost Walk Facebook, by permission
To start off the evening, we’ll meet at 17:00 for dinner at the Marktstüble in the Markthalle. After dinner we will meet our guide at 19:15 at the Stuttgart Rathaus beneath the statue of Stuttgardia, at the corner of Hirschstraße and Marktplatz, and end our tour at the Leonhardskirche. The allegorical statue Stuttgardia represents the protective goddess of the city of Stuttgart, according to medieval custom. It symbolizes the self-image and pride of the city’s inhabitants.
Anette Ladovic will tell us all about the checkered history of a former monastery, why there are tram tracks in the market hall, where the decapitations took place, which customs prevailed in old times in cemeteries – and much more.
And please, because the tour doesn’t start until late and is historical in nature (no apparitions actually appear), this is not designed for young children.
The 1 1/2 hour tour costs €15 p/p for members and €20 for non-members and must be prepaid. Details of how to do that will be sent in the email confirming your reservation.
We’ll have dinner at 17:00 at the Marktstüble on Sporerstraße 10, Tel: 0711-470-4400. Dinner is à la carte from a limited menu. Please state with your reservation whether you will be joining us for dinner. The Marktstüble is located on the ground floor of the Markthalle on the side away from the Marktplatz.

Directions:
Navigation address: Klosterstraße 2, 73547 Lorch
By car: From Stuttgart take B14 / B29 in the direction of Schorndorf and Schwäbisch Gmünd, once you pass Schorndorf, take exit Lorch-Ost (Kloster Lorch), follow L1154 through Lorch, at the first intersection turn right into Klosterstraße, drive up the hill until you get to Kloster Lorch, the parking area is on the right.
Public transportation: A MEX 13 train is listed as leaving Stuttgart Hbf on Sat, 10 Aug, at 09:20 from track 12, arriving Lorch at 09:56. Unfortunately, there is no bus listed that will reach the Monastery on time. It is about an 800-meter walk, half of that uphill, from the station to the Monastery. So, one can either pre-arrange a taxi at the Lorch station for the short ride up the hill or ask if someone driving to the event can pick them up / and give them a ride back down to the station afterwards. From Lorch there are trains leaving every 30 minutes to Stuttgart at one and thirty-one minutes past the hour.
Important Information about the lunch catering at the monastery:
There is no restaurant at the monastery complex, only a small café – the “Kloster Café” – which cannot host and service large groups at their place, so based on their advice, we are ordering our lunch meals through the catering business “Speisemeisterei Schwäbisch Gmünd”. The catering service will deliver the meal to the monastery and set it up as a buffet for us.
IMPORTANT: They also can’t collect money from us individually on the site. Therefore, we have included the price of the meal and beverage package in the total price for the event.

We invite you to join us on Saturday, July 20, 2024 for a Bus Trip back in time to the Middle Ages, as we visit the
Campus Galli living history open-air museum
between Sigmaringen and Messkirch. There, experts and volunteers are building a monastery according to the St. Gallen Monastery Plan, created at the Reichenau Monastery before 830 AD.
Photos: Scott Beard – by permission
Begun in 2012, Campus Galli is a building site as it would have existed 1200 years ago. Each summer more is added, with the end result (in 50 years or so) being a full stone monastery church and outbuildings. Experts make the tools, which are exact replicas of those which existed in the year 900. Everything done there is authentic to that time period. We will tour the site, enjoy a “medieval” lunch, and have free time to chat with all the artisans – both men and women – at the site. Experience the Middle Ages up close!
Timetable– Saturday, July 20, 2024:

At the museum shop / entrance there is a continuous film running (about 15 min.) which shows the history of the St. Gallen Monastery Plan and the Campus Galli site. It is only in German, but very interesting. If we arrive on time, you can watch the film before the tours. Otherwise, you can head back to the museum shop a little early and watch it then. There is also a café at the museum shop by the entrance, including (with nice weather) a roof top seating area with sun shades.

Theodor-Heuss-House and Bismarck Tower on Saturday, April 13
Dear Members and Guests,
please join us on Saturday, April 13, 2024, for a tour of the
Theodor-Heuss-Haus and the Bismarck-Tower
in Stuttgart-Nord
Photos: Christel Baumann (private – by permission)
Theodor Heuss (1884-1963) was a German liberal politician who served as the first President of West Germany (Bundespräsident – Federal President) from 1949 to 1959. In his biography, German history is reflected from the German Empire over two World Wars to the Federal Republic of Germany. After his presidency he spent his remaining 4 years in the house we will visit. We’ll see his private rooms, an example of home décor in the 50s/60s in Germany, and learn about the political office of the Bundespräsident of Germany.
The Stuttgart Bismarck Tower was opened in July 1904 and is one of about 240 Bismarck Towers that were built in various styles across Germany to commemorate its first chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898). The first tower was finished in 1869, the last around 1934.The Stuttgart Tower was initiated by the students of the University of Stuttgart (Technische Hochschule) and financed through campaigns and donations.
