June 2021

Dear Members, Guests and Friends of the German-American Club 1948 Stuttgart,

With the recent drop in the Covid-19 incidence rate we are beginning to see things open up a bit. Despite this progress, however, we are not far enough along with group meeting rules to schedule a successful program for June. The planned concert program in the Liederhalle has been cancelled, and a large outdoor gathering would still be difficult. We must continue with patience and caution this month.

We are confident, however, that things will progress far enough to allow us to hold our July program as planned. On Sunday, 25 July, we will board a steam train in Schorndorf and ride up to the town of Welzheim in the Schwäbisch-Frankischer Wald. Welzheim also contains a Roman fort (Castell) built on the Roman Empire boundary line (Limes). Following a nice midday meal together, we will walk to the fort accompanied by a Roman Legionary, who will tell us about how this fort came to be, and about his life patrolling the empire boundary. After the tours we will walk to a Biergarten where we can refresh ourselves while waiting to take the steam train back to Schorndorf.

As a thank you to our members for their support and patience, this event will be free for members (other than meal costs), non-members pay 10 Euros. Under current rules only those who can provide a negative Covid test (quick test 24 hrs), proof of full immunization, or proof of recovery from Covid will be allowed to board the train. We hope that by the 25th of July the rules will be further relaxed. In any event, look for the program flyer around the end of June for more details.

The rest of the schedule for the second half of 2021 remains the same, with the exception of the Cannstatter Volksfest, which has just been cancelled. Here is our current revised schedule for 2021:

Sunday, 25 July Schwäbische Waldbahn, Schorndorf-Welzheim, with Ost Kastell
Saturday, 14 August Annual General Membership Meeting, Alte Kanzlei, Stuttgart
Saturday, 11 September Wine Fest with Vineyard Tours and Tasting, Max-Eyth-See
Saturday, 16 October Police Museum, Pragsattel, Stuttgart
Saturday, 13/20 November Rilling Sekt Tour and Tasting, Bad Cannstatt
Saturday, 4 December Christmas Party, Alte Kanzlei, Stuttgart

We are almost there, and we really look forward to seeing all of you, old and new friends, again soon. In the meantime, we all remain committed to fostering German-American and international friendship in spirit (and digitally). Until then stay safe and healthy.
