Dear members and friends,

Due to ongoing circumstances we must cancel our planned club program for 9 May, 2020, a visit to the Falconry in Weil im Schönbuch. Although Baden- Württemberg has begun lifting some restrictions on social gatherings, allowing small businesses to open beginning today, the uncertainties involved in doing a program on the 9th of May are too large for us to responsibly plan an event. We have rescheduled the Falconry program for Saturday, 18 July. We hope we can do this interesting program at that time. Rest assured that your Board of Directors is actively working our programs for the remainder of the year, and we will resume club activities as soon as circumstances permit.

In that regard, the next scheduled program is a train trip to Karlsruhe on Saturday, the 6th of June. Planning continues for this event, and we will let you know in a timely fashion if we are able to go through with it. If we cancel the planned June event, only to find out later that we can do something in June after all, we have some ideas for programs that can be executed on relatively short notice. We will remain flexible, and let you know!

Our current tentative schedule for the remainder of 2020:

Saturday, June 6: Train Trip to Karlsruhe
Saturday, July 18: Visit to the Falconry, Weil im Schönbuch
Saturday/Sunday, 15/16 August: Visit to the Madagascar African Restaurant on the Marienplatz, Stuttgart
Saturday,12/19 September: Train Trip to Schwetzingen (or Karlsruhe, rescheduled, some time in September, or another program)
Saturday, October 17: Visit to the Police Museum in Stuttgart
Saturday, November 14: Sekt Tasting and Tour at the Rilling Sektkellerei, Bad Cannstatt
Saturday, December 05: Traditional Christmas Party, Alte Kanzlei Restaurant, Stuttgart

Mark the dates, and we will let you know what we can do and when we can do it! In the meantime, please be safe and sensible, maintain good hand hygiene and social distancing and follow the guidelines put out by the German government and the State of Baden-Württemberg, as well as your local authorities. Stay healthy and keep others healthy. We look forward to seeing you again when we are able to resume club activities!

On a very sad note I send the news that our longstanding member and good friend Heinz Hoffmann passed away on the 25th of March from heart problems. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Rosemarie and her family as they deal with this tragedy. At the same time, we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to know Heinz and to share good times with him in our club. He embodied the values at the heart of our club’s goal to further international understanding and friendship. Heinz was a true gentleman with a ready smile and wonderful sense of humor, who always had a good story to tell. We will miss him greatly. He was buried in the presence of immediate family on Tuesday, 31 March. There will be a memorial service at a later date when circumstances permit.

Thanks to all for your support of our club, and for your patience. We are all looking forward to the point where we can put this trying time behind us and get on with what we do best- participate in interesting events, make new friends and have lots of fun together- True German-American friendship at the local level right here in Stuttgart!

For your Board of Directors of the German-American Club 1948 Stuttgart,
