Staatsgalerie Stuttgart,
Hans Holbein and more!
Saturday, Jan 22, 2011

Dear members and friends,

It was in the same decade when Columbus discovered America that the German Painter Hans Holbein the Elder created the Grey Passion. It comprises twelve paintings and is considered one of the most outstanding and most extensive Passion cycles of early German art. We invite you to join us for a very informative look into the cultural time period of around 1500 and the restoration process of the Grey Passion. This exhibition shows the paintings in the context of the panel paintings and graphic series on the same theme by important predecessors, contemporaries and successors of Holbein. These juxtapositions will make the novel interpretation of the Passion cycle, the formally calm compositions, and the striking quality of the physiognomic descriptions, in Holbein's work all the more vivid. The opportunity to draw comparison on such high level would not have been possible without the generosity of lenders from all over the world in parting with their works - many of them of superb quality - for the duration of the show.

We will meet on Saturday, Jan 22, 2011, at 15:45 at the Entrance to the Old Building of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
